The objective of your own magazine

Magazines are published for different reasons.  Associations often publish magazines to offer their members added value, others publish magazines purely for the revenue it can generate, whilst others produce a magazine because of an interest in a particular area.  Whatever your reason for publishing a magazine, it will cost money.

If you are publishing a magazine for your members or you have a budget for producing the magazine then selling adverts is not necessarily a requirement.  If however you are relying on advertising and cover price sales to finance your magazine then there are different skills and requirements you will need.

Using advertisement sales to finance your magazine

In theory you could start a magazine with no money, depending on how quickly you are paid from advertising deals.  If you can get your advertisers to pay in advance of you publishing the magazine then you are in a fantastic position.  Otherwise you will need enough money to pay the editorial team, designers, printers and distribution plus any other associated costs.

Editorial content

If you are from a journalistic background you could put together the editorial content yourself.
For companies or associations you may have a press dept or a dedicated team for the project.  Contract publishing is another alternative route for publishing. 

Contract publishing

Depending on the deal you strike with the publisher you could receive anywhere from zero to 50% of the advertising revenue.  Using a contract publisher for your project relieves you of the pressure of doing all the work and at the end of the day you have a magazine.  This route is usually only for Associations or who not necessarily looking to publish a magazine to generate income.

The Audience

The audience is the most vital element of any magazine, for without readers you just have pieces of paper.  If you are selling advertising any potential advertiser will want to make sure that the audience is there right target market.
You will have to define your audience right at the beginning.

 Advertising Sales

Selling advertising is not an easy thing to do.  For you to have any chance your product must be good and audience must be right.  Remember though, you will not be the only one pitching advertising space to companies, so you will have to stand out.
